ABOUT THE EXHIBITION DESIGN
"The shipping pallet is a vital component of the industrial process. It is the tray on which manufactured goods are transferred, and it even serves as a means to transfer artwork and various creative pursuits. It is typically overlooked. It tends to fade into the background, mistaken for an extension of the material it carries. A peek behind any retail store reveals troves of empty pallets bound for disposal. They are our "Utopian" solution to minimizing material impact, revitalizing, re-using and re-imagining responsible ways to exhibit art. A pallet sits, rough and porous, in contrast to the smooth and polished surface on which other work is displayed. Can its coarseness actually be more approachable? Can it reveal something about the relationship between the art and the structure on which it is displayed?
Having been re-imagined as vessels for the display, transport, and storage of art in Brooklyn Utopias?, these units now spark a dialogue about their new context. Once used as scaffolding for the transfer of a commodity, our pallets now scaffold the passion and hard work that results in a serious look at the contrast between Brooklyn idealized and Brooklyn reality."
