Brooklyn Utopias?
Eduardo Alexander Rabel with Katherine Gressel, Sketch for collaborative piece at the Brooklyn Historical Society
2009
This piece further builds on Rabel's idea of the butterfly as a metaphor for Brooklyn and its constant metamorphosis. An interactive piece at the Brooklyn Historical society will invite all visitors to decorate cut-out paper butterflies according to their own visions of a Utopian Brooklyn. They will attach these paper symbols onto a huge painted "butterfly" whose wings are created by four intersecting maps of Brooklyn. The installation itself will change and grow throughout the course of the exhibition as every day new participants contribute differing visions of an ideal Brooklyn.
