Brooklyn Utopias?

Aluminum Foil and Tape
When buildings get erected, they often begin with a structural steel skeleton, and when a project gets put on hold, this is frequently all that remains built. Using aluminum foil and tape, I have created a fragile truss system that resembles a component of these structural steel skeletons that have been left partially-built.

Not only does this piece reference the dystopia of the housing boom and bust in New York, but the fragile foil also references the dystopic nature of the care taken for public infrastructure in New York City and in our country. With this piece I also hope to bring to mind structural failures such as the recent collapse of a portion of tunnel in the New York City Subway, the 35W Bridge collapse in Minnesota, the faulty construction involved with The Big Dig in Massachusetts, and the failure of levees in New Orleans 4 years ago.
